Getting home

Getting home is a huge step on the road to recovery. While it is often an enormous relief to be back home, some may find the first few weeks a bit of an emotional rollercoaster in terms of readjusting to everyday life. In this section, we've provided some general information and advice on the common physical and psychological issues you might face, what you can do to help the recovery process along, and the types of help that might be available to you and your family after you get home. We've also included a few short pieces on other people's experience, which we hope you will find helpful.

Silverfit is a charity led by older people for older people who aim to promote happier, healthier ageing through physical activity and at the same time combat social isolation. They run in person sessions in some London parks where you socialise before and after an activity such as nordic walking or tai chi. There are some brilliant exercise videos on the website.

In this video, Jackie talks about her difficulties sleeping after ICU. She also talks about having dreams about ICU when she got home, and some delirium in ICU. Jackie's delirium sometimes made her think she was at sea, which is a very common ICU delirium theme. She also said that some of her delirium has led to a hobby!
