Lane Fox Unit (LFU) - St Thomas's Hospital
Lane Fox Unit (LFU) is located on the ground floor in the South Wing of St Thomas's Hospital.
Patients with long-term respiratory failure who need support from a ventilator (breathing machine) are cared for on the LFU. It is one of the largest services in the UK for home ventilation and weaning people from mechanical ventilation.
The Lane Fox Unit provides the following services:
- assessing and treating people with respiratory failure, including home non-invasive ventilation
- a rapid access service for people with rapidly progressing neuromuscular conditions, including motor neurones disease
- an outreach service to visit and assess people at their local hospital or home
- working with other specialist services to care for people with complex neurological diseases.
We work with primary care services and local hospitals to support people with long-term conditions such as:
- chronic breathing or respiratory failures, because of neuromuscular diseases,
- chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- obesity
- chest wall deformity or disease
The Lane Fox unit are linked with Lane Fox REMEO Centre, which is a purpose-built, state of the art, long-term ventilation centre in Redhill, Surrey. Patients may be transferred their for ongoing care and treatment.
